How to Make the Most of a Layover in Doha

How to Make the Most of a Layover in Doha

Despite being a major commercial flight hub in the Middle East, Qatar’s Hamad International Airport is home to quite a few long layovers. But what if you don’t feel like shopping and snacking for eight hours? What if you want to hit the town? What if you want to take a nap? Leaving the airport is a bit complicated, but it’s doable if your layover is longer than eight hours. Here’s what you need to know.

How to score a free hotel

Upon arrival, head straight to the Transfers Desk. (Do not pass immigration, or you’ll wind up in the maze of the departure gates). The transfer desk attendant will determine if you are eligible for a complimentary hotel room to pass the time between flights. If so, you’ll receive documentation allowing you to leave the airport and information on which hotel you’ll be staying at. You’ll be assigned a complimentary shuttle van for both drop-off and pickup. You’ll need to go through immigration on your way out.

Even if you aren’t looking for a room, you’ll get one anyway, so utilize it to keep your bags safe while you check out the neighborhood. Remember to give yourself plenty of time to get back, because you’ll need to go through security checks again as a brand-new passenger.

Traveling with a mate? Male/female pairs will need to present a marriage certificate to book a room together, as determined by a somewhat inconsistent Qatari law. A study found that Western brand hotels and luxury hotel chains did not ask for proof. If you are asked for a marriage certificate and can’t provide one, you’ll be booking two rooms.

How to get around

If your flight isn’t long enough to qualify for a layover perk, you’ll need to leave the airport by heading toward the arrivals gate (not transfers, even if you are transferring later). Go to immigration first and have cash on hand for the visa process. Once you are through immigration, make your way down to the ground transportation exit and find the queue for the Karwa transportation service or the blue cabs.

You may be tempted to hire a private cab instead of waiting in the long Karwa lines, but remember that private taxis play by their own rules, and there are enough reported incidents of price gouging and of drivers bullying female passengers that you should play it safe. Your Karwa should take you around Doha for no more than 30 riyals (or a little over $8 U.S.).

Where to go

Hamad International is roughly 30 minutes from the city center of Doha, Qatar’s capital, and the Corniche is a great place to enjoy a few quick hours. Corniche Street is home to several large hotel chains (Four Seasons, Sheraton), the gorgeous Museum of Islamic Art, and the Souq Waqif. Walk along the Corniche, where you’ll see runners, bikers, tourists, and families enjoying the sun, the water, and stunning views of the glittering Doha cityscape. Stop in to the Museum of Islamic Art; the gift shop alone is worth it.

The Souq Waqif will be your one-stop souvenir shop: jewelry and bangles, copper and gold, minicarpets, ornate tea sets, and mosaic lanterns. It’s also an important town square and meeting place, offering street food of all kinds. Before heading back to the airport, enjoy one of the many cafes at the Souq, or grab a street snack like grilled meat or corn.

How to behave

You should always be respectful to the locals. Doha is an advanced, modern city, but leave the shorts and crop tops in your bag, and remember that drinking alcohol in public is a no-no here. Women don’t need to cover their heads in public, but feel free to bring a scarf in your carry-on bag in case you feel out of place among those who do.

If you’re traveling during the holy month of Ramadan, check ahead to see what will be open during your selected dates and times.

What to do back at the airport

There is a wealth of amazing shops, so if you don’t feel like carrying souvenirs through your layover excursion, take a gander at the copper bowls and plates, coffee sets, jewelry, and even gifts from the museums, all within the terminal. Whatever you do, don’t forget to take a photo with the famous big bear art installation.

How to Make the Most of a Layover

Many fliers view layovers as an inconvenience, but for Jaclyn Sienna India, the owner of the New York City travel company Sienna Charles, they’re an opportunity to explore the destination her flight stops in. “I try to make the place where I have to change planes a part of my vacation,” she said. “Often, these side trips end up being as exciting as my final destination.”

Here, Ms. India’s advice on how to have a memorable layover:

PLAN LAYOVERS STRATEGICALLY Have a more diverse vacation by choosing a stop that is in contrast to the locale you’re headed to. If you’re en route to a beach getaway in the Maldives, for example, consider a stop in Dubai to fit in an urban escape, or stop in either Dallas or Chicago for a ski or hiking trip in Jackson Hole or Aspen. You can also plan for a layover on your return journey, and time permitting, you can do a layover each way in different locales. Ms. India often builds in two separate layovers when planning itineraries for her clients and said that she may have to play around with flight combinations to make them happen, but they can be done.

RETURN TO YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATIONS Ms. India suggested that travelers arrange layovers in destinations they enjoy visiting and give their trip that special touch by participating in a specific experience there. It could be a meal at a favorite restaurant in Paris or an art show in London. Personally, Ms. India said she loves stopping in Reykjavik on her way to other cities in Europe for some relaxation at the Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal spa. “Going to the Blue Lagoon is one of my all-time favorite things to do, and fitting a short visit in makes my overall trip really pop,” she said.

A DAYLONG LAYOVER WORKS, TOO If you have between eight hours and less than a day to kill between flights, you can still have a fantastic layover, Ms. India said. On a recent 10-hour layover in Helsinki, for example, she took a privately guided tour of the city, which she had booked in advance. “I was able to get a feel of Helsinki in a few hours and also had a delicious meal at one of the popular restaurants there,” she said. Other possibilities for activities on short layovers include an art tour of a well-known museum, a shopping excursion in a specific neighborhood and even a jog, walk or bike ride in a scenic park.

MAKE YOUR STOP AN AFFORDABLE ONE Your layover doesn’t have to be costly. Some airlines, said Ms. India, allow free layovers — sometimes with a time restriction — so a stop won’t cost you more money beyond your ticket price (British Airways, for example, allows free layovers for fliers who purchase a fully flexible ticket). A handful of airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Emirates, have occasional layover promotions in the spirit of promoting the cities where they are based.

Make The Most of Your Layover With These Airport Dining Venues

Gone are the days of grabbing a simple fast food burger en route to your gate in the airport.

There are so many delicious options available today, from nutritious salads to award-winning restaurants and star chef venues.

So why should your airport dining experience be sub par? The answer is simple, it shouldn’t. So grab your boarding pass and embrace the joys that come with a delayed flight or a prolonged layover.

Dublin Airport’s Marqette restaurant has been named Airport Food Hall of the Year twice, so you can imagine that travellers passing through terminal one are in for a fantastic dining experience.

The FAB Awards recognise best practises in airport food and beverages and since opening in 2015, Marqette has done just that. Marqette’s on-site bakery makes fresh bread and pastries, street food, crepes and omelettes cooked via a converted 1960’s Citreon Van aptly named “The Hatch”.

If you don’t have time to sit down for a full meal, Marqette’s honest-based grab and go option will be right up your alley.

A haven for travellers, Gordon Ramsey’s Plane Food at London Heathrow Airport is an institution.

With a raw bar, a full breakfast menu, an Asian bar and delicious main dishes from the core menu, such as rib eye steak and rigatoni pasta, you won’t be short of options at this popular venue.

In a hurry? Plane Food’s ‘Grab and Go’ option ensures that you can still enjoy a Gordon Ramsay dining experience 40,000 feet in the air.

The capital of Qatar, is an up-and-coming spot for travellers, particularly those visiting en route to their far flung destination.

Want to feel fancier than the average passenger? Simply drop by the Caviar House in Doha Airport for a taste of quality. At Caviar House & Prunier, everything is prepared fresh in front of the guests.

Seafood lovers will seek out this restaurant before boarding their plane to try the Swiss Balik Salmon and luxurious Prunier Caviar and they might even struggle to leave their seats after eating.

Explore the amazing flavours of Mexico at Tortas Frontera at Chicago O’Hare airport.

Created by Chef Rick Bayless, Tortas Frontera features hand-crafted tortas, fresh-made guacamole and hand-shaken margaritas, all made with high-quality ingredients from top local providers and recipes based on the incredible fare found in Mexico.

Some of the dishes on offer include griddle-baked Mexican sandwiches with a variety of fillings like beer-braised beef short ribs, chipotle chicken, garlicky shrimp and goat cheese, fresh tortilla chips with salsa, soups, salads, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt bar and molletes, which are warm, open-faced sandwiches.

Fancy sampling some of Wolfgang Puck’s signature cuisine while you wait for your flight to depart? You can do just that if you happen to be passing through Boston Logan International Airport.

There are also some seriously tempting options available from the restaurant’s grab and go kiosks. If Boston isn’t on your travel list anytime soon, Puck Express can also be found in airports in Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Fancy a taste of Italy in one of London’s main airports? This venue is one of more than 40 of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s restaurants in the UK.

Jamie’s Italian serves rustic Italian dishes, made using local and seasonal produce.

Tuck into fresh pasta dishes, a pizza and maybe a cocktail or two before you race for the gate at boarding call.

Alex Raij, the chef behind Manhattan restaurants, El Quinto Pino and Txikito, has us craving Spanish tapas like there’s no tomorrow at Piquillo.

Forget that you’re in terminal 5 in New York’s JFK airport and indulge in bocadillos, fried calamari, Serrano ham and all manner of sensational Spanish delights, not to mention some paella.

Be sure and sip a glass of vino or a refreshing sangria while you’re relaxing here too.

If you assume that airport food is on par with hospital food you would be very wrong, especially when considering San Francisco Airport. SFO airport is home to a number of high quality eateries, with many being smaller versions of larger restaurants in the city centre.

One example of this is 1300 on Filmore and their famous Fried Chicken paired with a waffle and maple syrup, which may seem like an impossible combination but it really works. It wouldn’t be something you’d want to eat on a regular basis but it’s suitably indulgent.

For a healthier option, Samovar Tea is located in the pre security area of the International Terminal, so you don’t even need to be flying off anywhere to enjoy the food on offer here.

The perfect option for those seeking a healthy snack, the Avocado and Almond Butter sandwiches were particularly delicious. Enjoy a chai latte to complete this nutritious treat.

45 Minute layover in Doha airport?

I'm flying from Washington DC to Tehran next week, with a layover in Doha. I usually am used to 8 hour layovers, all the way to 14 hour layovers. However, I now am faced with a layover of only 45 minutes. Is it possible to make this connection, or will I most likely have to be rebooked on the next flight?

If you have to check luggage, this will factor into your layover. If you have a short layover, any little delay in the process could mean your luggage won’t have time to make it from the first plane to the second. Often, when it’s the same airlines or a code sharing flight, you don’t have to check the luggage again. The connection timetables are ambitious for people with lots of luggage or who walk very slowly.

During your layover, you have to get from the gate where your first flight came in to the gate where your second flight leaves. Sometimes it’s a long walk. I am not sure how it works for the new HIA.

Notwithstanding the above, you need time for boarding the second flight.

On the bright side, airlines do build in standard minimum connection times into their booking engines

Day One

Drop your stuff at the seaside Four Seasons Hotel Doha , one of the options offered to travelers through Qatar Airways' new layover program, then hit the busy Souq Waqif for woven dresses, stacks of bronze bracelets, and mounds of cumin and cardamom. Most shops close between noon and 4 p.m., so grab hummus and grilled cuttlefish for lunch at Parisa, located in the souk. From there, it’s an easy walk to the I. M. Pei–designed Museum of Islamic Art, which has Syrian ceramics, Iranian textiles, and free admission. Stay for dinner: Alain Ducasse’s IDAM, on the top floor, has French–meets–Persian Gulf dishes like squab with dates and turmeric.

Museum of Islamic Art

Visiting the Museum of Islamic Art is a great opportunity to get to know more about the culture and artistic manifestations in the Islamic world. It’s one of the biggest collections of its kind including art from all the Middle East like metalworks, textiles, jewelry, manuscripts, and ceramics.

The museum is located at the side of Dhow Harbour in the Corniche area and the entry is totally free!

If you are tired you can chill out in the café or just make some good Instagram shots inside or in the exteriors.

The Pearl

One of the places to go and see by yourself the luxury at Doha Bay, built-in one of the areas were pearl were dived and now the home of luxury villas, yachts, and high-end restaurants and shops.

For many people, the highlight is the Venice area, where you can be in a Venice replica including bridges, canals, and colorful houses and it’s totally free.

Corniche

One of the highlights in Doha is this beautiful promenade along Doha Bay, including palm trees and flowers, and a beautiful view of the Pal Tree Island and the skyscrapers.

Be aware that cycling is not allowed, but a great place for jogging, walking or just people watching. On evenings is the best time to enjoy this area but it can be bit crowded if you want to have it for yourself only go i¿on a Friday morning.

Best Day Trip to do in Doha

Desert Safari

One of the most fun things to do if you have enough time in Doha is heading to the desert. It’s only 30 minutes away from the city and you can experience a few hours trip or event stay overnight.

For a day trip, I can recommend this tour that will bring you on a dunes rally, plus a short ride in a camel and drinking tea in the desert.

But if you want to stay overnight, the Regency Sealine Camp near the ocean is the most perfect experience to have. This glamping is having everything you need to experience the desert with all the luxury but at the same time, you will be in touch with the sand and the best view of the stars in the night.

Getting around Doha

Doha is surprisingly easy to navigate using a combination of public transport and taxis. The city’s newly opened, ultra-modern underground metro system has three lines (red, green and gold) that run between the airport, the Corniche, and Katara Cultural Centre in the north of the city.

There are stops for Souq Waqif, the National Museum, and Katara, making it very convenient for tourists. Single fares cost just 2 riyal (55 cents) and tickets can be purchased from the easy-to-use machines located inside the stations.

If you happen to be visiting on a Friday, note that the metro doesn’t start running until 2pm. Uber is widespread in Doha and an affordable alternative if you prefer to travel by taxi.

Shopping, Eating, and Sight Seeing: How to Make the Most of a Layover in Doha

Despite being a major commercial flight hub in the Middle East, Qatar’s Hamad International Airport is home to quite a few long layovers. To make these long waits more palatable for passengers, the Doha transportation hub recently undertook a $16 billion renovation that includes an updated luxury shopping terminal and a new business-class lounge with large personal showers, power outlets, and free Wi-Fi. But what if you don’t feel like shopping and snacking for eight hours? What if you want to hit the town? What if you want to take a nap? Leaving the airport is a bit complicated, but it’s doable if your layover is longer than eight hours. Here’s what you need to know.

24 Hours in Qatar: A Long Layover in Doha

In summary, I’m so glad that I decided to finally leave Doha’s airport and spend 24 hours in Qatar by booking a long layover in Doha to get to see the city and the country. I absolutely loved my Qatar stopover and would definitely visit again or book another Qatar Airways layover flight with Doha transit (and just do more stopovers in general)!

Two Traveling Texans has a great post on How to Book a Stopover Flight Online , which is really informative.

Before I booked my flight, I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough time or that the things to do in Qatar would be far from each other and Doha’s airport. But, if you’re also considering a a long layover in Doha with a Qatar Airways stopover – get out of the airport and into the city!
